While you're watching the Super Bowl this Sunday, don't lose sight of the real issues

You'll Never See This Side of the Super Bowl on TV
By Laura Dimon  January 27, 2014

It almost seems like another life, or like it could've, should've, just been a nightmare. But it's very real.

Several years ago, Danielle Douglas, now 31, was trafficked into sex slavery. Her story does not begin with a spring break gone wrong, or in a dusty town in Cambodia, or on a dark, brothel-lined alleyway in Bangkok. It starts in an apartment in Boston.

Douglas was 17 years old in 2000 when she moved from New Jersey to start college at Northeastern University. One night, when she arrived at what she thought was a party, she found nothing of the sort. There was only one man there, who appeared to be in his mid-40s. He claimed to feel badly that there had been a misunderstanding, so he offered her in for dinner. For the next two weeks, they casually kept in touch. "I honestly have no idea how he got my information," she said in an interview. She suspects that he paid off her friends for her phone number.

At the end of that two weeks, everything changed.

"I was hanging out with him, we were going to get something to eat, so I thought, and I ended up in Chinatown where he basically shoved me out of the car and told me to make money for him."

She did not have her phone, purse, identification or anything. "I was pretty much in shock. I saw other girls out there at the time so I kind of understood what he wanted me to do, but I wasn’t interested in doing that. … I went into an alleyway to figure out what I was going to do."

He came around the other side of the alley. "He beat me very badly and threatened my life and told me to make the money or I was going to die. So at that point I just started following directions."

It only got worse from there. She was constantly beaten, and he was always with her unless she was with a john (a client paying for sex.) "I was in so much fear, the only thing in my mind was to not do anything wrong and get killed or hurt."

She was manipulated, intimidated, and forced into submission. "They know everything you do, every minute of the day. [You are] mentally and physically chained."

Perhaps one of the most jarring and perplexing types of her abuse was the psychological. The pimp brainwashed Douglas to believe she was worth nothing. "You're so ashamed of what you've done already, and then to be told every minute of every day, 'I'm the only one that’s going to love you now. The only one who is ever gonna love a ho is a pimp … I can take care of you.' And this is drilled into you. Drilled, drilled, drilled. Until you start believing it.'"

She remained under her pimp's intense, overpowering control and manipulation for the miserable two years that followed. The once innocent, bright-eyed girl from Summit, New Jersey never attended Northeastern University.

Franklin child prostitution ring allegations
The Franklin child prostitution ring allegations took place between 1988 and 1991 and involved an alleged child sex ring serving prominent citizens of the Nebraska Republican Party, as well as high-level U.S. politicians.[1] The allegations also claimed that the alleged sex ring was led by, "a cult of devil worshipers involved in the mutilation, sacrifice and cannibalism of numerous children."[1] The allegations centered on the actions of Lawrence E. King Jr., who ran the now defunct Franklin Community Federal Credit Union (FCFCU) in Omaha.[2]

"A pimp is only as good as his product, and his product is women. Now you've got to go out there and get the best ones you can find. And you've got to work them broads like nobody's ever worked them before. And never forget: anybody can control a woman's body, you see, but the key is to control her mind."

...and people are worried about Obama.

The media is working overtime to remind you that America still has a race issue

We originally thought a federal judge in Montana, appointed by Bush/Cheney, had sent a racist email about President Obama from the judge's official chambers.

As it turns out, he also sent messages targeting blacks, Indians, Hispanics, women, certain religious faiths, liberal political leaders, and gays.

Google's Multibillion Purchase Of Nest Is Just The Beginning Of 'The Internet Of Things'

We saw some huge news today in the Internet of Things space, that area of tech that's trying to connect everyday objects to the Internet and make them smarter.

Nest, a company founded by former Apple employee Tony Fadell that makes smart thermostats and smoke detectors, sold to Google for $3.2 billion. Take the purchase as a sign that big tech companies truly do think we'll one day live in a future where everything is connected online.

According to analysis from Business Insider Intelligence, more than 18 billion devices will be connected to the Web by 2018. Wow.

This chart says it all:

Google acquires Nest's line of home automation products for $3.2 billion, pledges continued support for iOS

Google acquires Nest's line of home automation products for $3.2 billion, pledges continued support for iOS

We'll be honest: if you told us a big company was going to buy Nest, we wouldn't have guessed Google. After all, the home automation company was founded by Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, both ex-members of the original iPod team. Heck, the Nest Thermostat is sold at Apple stores, and is referred to in the blogosphere as something of an honorary Apple product. But whaddya know? Google just scooped up the outfit for a cool $3.2 billion. That bit of inside baseball aside, Google is being quick to assure users that Nest will continue to operate under its own brand -- not unlike Motorola. Quoth Mr. Fadell: "Google will help us fully realize our vision of the conscious home and allow us to change the world faster than we ever could if we continued to go it alone. We've had great momentum, but this is a rocket ship."

Also, to answer the obvious question you're all asking: yes, Nest will continue to offer apps for both iOS and Android. That means Apple fans will still be able to tinker around with their thermostats and Nest Protect smoke detectors even after the acquisition goes through. There's also a possibility that Google's other products will eventually integrate more tightly with the Nest lineup, but so far, Google is staying mum. "Nest's product line obviously caught the attention of Google and I'm betting that there's a lot of cool stuff we could do together, but nothing to share today," said Rogers. In a pair of blog posts, Nest's founders promised the company would keep its "distinct brand identity" and that it takes privacy seriously, with a policy that limits the sharing of customer info to improving its services. Until that day comes, then, we'll leave you to speculate -- feel free to leave your best guesses in the comments.

Who signed the most Executive orders?

I was discussing the administration of Obama, and realized that there's still a bit of misinformation floating around concerning who signed the most.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt/Executive orders
Administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945)

3,728 Total Executive Orders Issued [1]
Range: Executive Order 6071 thru Executive Order 9537

I just finished watching this amazing short film, 'The Awareness'

I won't say much, other than its the best short film I have seen in a while.

The Awareness

"On the eve of a technological breakthrough, an insignificant janitor and a prominent engineer are faced with a decision that will alter the course of humanity: the release of the first aware computer system into the world."

watch it here:

So, I've decided to create a blog.

Not a new concept, just something more public.
I'll have updates each week, hopefully.
